Degu Versus the Couch

I had to rescue Claudia degu today. Rescue her from the great depths of the couch! Don't ask me how she did it, I haven't a clue. One minute she was squeezing between the back cushions and the next she disappeared in to the couch. That's right, actually inside the couch!

The gaps between the back cushions go nowhere. They just lead down to behind the sitting cushions but she wiggled her way down through a gap barely big enough to fit your hand in and in a split second she was unreachable. Wandering around in the dark sealed interior of the couch.

She couldn't climb back up the way she got in so the only solution was to tip the couch up and remove part of the black plastic-like sheet they use to seal up the bottom. She started to squeak because she couldn't get out but with a torch, a box of millet (they love millet and know the sound of the box), and enough staples removed to make a degu sized-escape hatch, she eventually worked her way along and sheepishly climbed out. It was almost as if she knew she'd done wrong!

She spent the next 5 minutes getting a hug and composing herself but soon she was back to normal and back to enjoying her shoulder rides. I would have taken photos of the rescue but I think removing her was more important.

Never let your degus out on the couch unless you want to spend half an hour ripping it apart to rescue them!

Degu Versus the Wooden Wheels

When I bought wooden exercise wheels for my 3 girls I knew I was taking a gamble. Degus love to chew wood but in the back of my mind I was hoping that they'd realize that wheel destruction meant no running. After all, they are rather intelligent little rodents. Close up of damage After 6 months of little to no interest in chewing the wheels I thought I was on to a winner and had the only non-destructive degus in the world. This afternoon, after a morning out walking I came home to wheel destruction. Degu damage to Wooden Exercise Wheels 4 hours earlier they weren't particularly bad. Just some light gnawing around the edges and on the stands. Now they resemble something that's been, quite literally, blown apart by a grenade. It's like they woke up this morning and thought, "Right, degus. We're going to start chewing these wheels and we're not going to stop until they're gone!" It's a good job I didn't pay full price for the ...

From Babies Degus to Adults

It has been a long time since I last posted. I have a mountain of things to do related to my work and while I've had time to tend to my 3 girls, I just haven't had time to post anything new.

The Big Degu Cage Build - Part Four

The cage is progressing nicely. The bottom section is almost complete. Still have the vinyl tiles (for extra protection against pee) to put in, one level to cut and attach, and some small platforms which will help form a ramp up to the top section of the cage. I have a deep 30cm mess guard which will form the basis of a makeshift digging pit and landscaped area. There will be one level and you can see the hole for access to floor 2 which will be in the top section. It was supposed to be in the back but it was going to be a nightmare to do because of the build being in 2 parts so it can be taken apart for easier moving. This means that I now have to rethink my first level. It was going to be set back slightly from the front but I may have to bring it closer to eliminate the massive drop and reduce injury should there be a fall. I'm going to have a look at some other DIY cages for some ideas but the main priority tomorrow is to get the main construction of the top section comp...
