Degu Versus the Spot Clean

from left to right: Claudia, Mrs F and Myka

I've just finished doing a spot clean of my girls' cage. This is them chilling before I went in and destroyed their home. As you can imagine it's not quite so peaceful now. Claudia hates cleaning days with a vengeance. I'm going to have to catch her on camera one day because her antics are hilarious albeit a little painful for me.

For some reason they like to go toilet in front of their 2 wheels so it's just a case of scooping up the soiled bedding and replacing it, right? Wrong! Claudia likes to make it as difficult as possible. The first thing she does is roll on the bare shelves as if she was taking a dust bath while I'm trying to put fresh bedding in. Once she's bored of that she tries to either climb in the bag full of dirty bedding, or try and pull it back in the cage.

Degu nest made from grass bowl

Once the toilet areas are done I move on to the dreaded nest. They've got various potential nest sites in the cage but they like an overturned grass bowl buried under a mix of straw and hay for night time snoozing. As soon as I make a move to test for wetness, Claudia is down their like a shot trying to fight with my hand. She wags her tail, barks, karate kicks, and nips my hand, and she doesn't stop until I've finished. Crazy Goo!

Degus sleeping in their wood cabin

Once the cage door closes all becomes peaceful again until I do another spot clean in 3-4 days. At the minute, Claudia is foraging for the food that is no longer there as it was in the toilet area, and the other two are fast asleep in the wood cabin. If only they'd stay asleep while I cleaned.

The Big Degu Cage Build - Part Four

The cage is progressing nicely. The bottom section is almost complete. Still have the vinyl tiles (for extra protection against pee) to put in, one level to cut and attach, and some small platforms which will help form a ramp up to the top section of the cage. I have a deep 30cm mess guard which will form the basis of a makeshift digging pit and landscaped area. There will be one level and you can see the hole for access to floor 2 which will be in the top section. It was supposed to be in the back but it was going to be a nightmare to do because of the build being in 2 parts so it can be taken apart for easier moving. This means that I now have to rethink my first level. It was going to be set back slightly from the front but I may have to bring it closer to eliminate the massive drop and reduce injury should there be a fall. I'm going to have a look at some other DIY cages for some ideas but the main priority tomorrow is to get the main construction of the top section comp...

The Degus Have Moved In

This morning 3 little degus became the newest members of my family and they're the 3 cutest girls ever! I was up until midnight filling and dressing their cage ready for them to move in and they are loving it. 2 of them still think that there are only 2 floors and not 4, and all 3 have spent most of the day running in their wheel. Just before I settled down to write this they were all in a 'goo pile' on top of their cabin. It's a little dark in the room for a decent photo and I don't want to use the flash so I'll have to wait until there's a little more light to get a photo of them huddled together. They are all still a little flighty and scared of the camera but I managed to get a few decent photos of them. Don't have any names yet as I'm waiting to see what kind of personalities they have. My brother wants to call them Penny, Amy, and Bernadette… The Big Degu Theory! UPDATE — Here's a little video my brother recorded. :)

Degu Versus the Wooden Wheels

When I bought wooden exercise wheels for my 3 girls I knew I was taking a gamble. Degus love to chew wood but in the back of my mind I was hoping that they'd realize that wheel destruction meant no running. After all, they are rather intelligent little rodents. Close up of damage After 6 months of little to no interest in chewing the wheels I thought I was on to a winner and had the only non-destructive degus in the world. This afternoon, after a morning out walking I came home to wheel destruction. Degu damage to Wooden Exercise Wheels 4 hours earlier they weren't particularly bad. Just some light gnawing around the edges and on the stands. Now they resemble something that's been, quite literally, blown apart by a grenade. It's like they woke up this morning and thought, "Right, degus. We're going to start chewing these wheels and we're not going to stop until they're gone!" It's a good job I didn't pay full price for the ...
